Meta just made a bold move in the world of social media, but it might not be what you’d expect. Other platforms are still focused on human-created content. However, Meta has launched a new project that bets on the future of AI-generated creativity. It’s called Vibes, and it’s Meta’s new social feed entirely dedicated to short-form, AI-powered videos.
Meta’s new Vibes platform is a feed for AI-generated video
You can find “Vibes” right in the Meta AI app and website. The idea is to turn a simple AI chatbot into a full-fledged creative hub. Think of it like this: instead of scrolling through videos made by people, you’re scrolling through videos made by an AI, guided by human prompts. If you see a video you like, the platform makes it simple to “remix” it. It will allow you to add new music, change the visual style, or incorporate your own ideas to make a new video. You can also start from scratch with a text-based prompt and build your own creation from the ground up.
More than just a new feature, this is a strategic play by Meta. By launching Vibes, the company is directly challenging TikTok, but from an entirely different angle. Instead of trying to replicate TikTok’s model of user-generated content, Meta is creating a new category: AI-generated social content. Elon Musk recently revealed that “Vine” would make a comeback with a similar AI-powered idea. However, it seems that Meta got ahead by launching their own service first.
A growing trend
The timing is interesting, too. AI tools for video and image generation are becoming more common. YouTube has even been integrating options to generate videos based on prompts in Shorts, for example. This seems to be a growing trend, and we could see more similar moves from other companies in the coming weeks.
Going back to Vibes, it aims to integrate seamlessly into Meta’s existing ecosystem. You can share the videos you create in the app directly to the Vibes feed. You can also cross-post them to your Instagram and Facebook Stories and Reels. This kind of integration gives the platform an advantage over standalone AI tools due to the massive user base that Meta’s social platforms boast.
That said, this is definitely a bold move. Many have adopted AI-powered tools for their daily lives. However, when it comes to multimedia content, there seems to be animosity from certain quarters. Many have complained about YouTube’s intentions to fill the Shorts feed with AI videos, for example. It will be interesting to see if Meta’s move pays off.
