Meta has reportedly revived its smartwatch project from the dead after shelving it a few years ago, and it’s now being stated that it has a new smartwatch currently in development. Like most smartwatches, Meta’s new smartwatch, which Meta is said to have labeled Malibu 2 internally, will track health metrics. It’s not mentioned specifically what types of health tracking features the smartwatch will offer. Having said that, you can probably expect the usual tracking functions.
Sleep tracking, stress tracking, and of course, the tracking of several types of exercises like running, cycling, swimming, and more, will most likely be on board. Because it would be a little weird not to offer those things in a smartwatch in 2026. All of that is also to be expected, so it probably won’t be a surprise if and when Meta lists those things off as features. Meta was working on a smartwatch project that was reportedly killed off back in 2022. The company then reportedly revived a pair of smartwatch projects back in July of 2025. It’s not exactly clear if this new smartwatch was part of one of those projects.
The new Meta smartwatch will contain Meta AI and launch later this year
According to a report from The Information (via Engadget), Meta plans to launch the device later this year. It will also contain Meta AI, though it’s not immediately clear what the AI functionality will do for the watch or the user wearing it. Presumably, it might work a lot like Gemini does on the Pixel Watch 4. So you might be able to ask Meta questions and have it respond to you.
This will, of course, work differently from when you ask Meta questions using the company’s AI smart glasses. Doing so with those on lets Meta form a response based on what it sees using the integrated cameras. Although Meta was reported to be working on smartwatches with cameras at some point in the past, there’s no mention of cameras on this new watch. There’s no mention of specs, price, or an exact availability date. With that in mind, it could be several months before more is known.
