It seems MediaTek is about to launch a new chip that could make waves in the mid-range and sub-flagship segments. This is the Dimensity 8500, a chip that, according to a recent leak, will surpass 2 million points in the popular AnTuTu benchmark. This would make it one of the most powerful mobile SoCs out there, and not just in its segment.
The latest leak comes from reliable Chinese tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo. According to the report, the Dimensity 8500 has the potential to close the gap between more affordable devices and top-tier ones more than ever.
Dimensity 8500 chip tipped to cross the 2-million-point barrier in AnTuTu’s benchmark
MediaTek would rely on TSMC’s efficient 4nm manufacturing tech for the new chipset. However, the real highlight is the improved Mali-G720 GPU. This isn’t just a minor tweak, though. This GPU improvement would be so substantial that the chip could achieve an AnTuTu benchmark score of over 2 million points. To put that in perspective, its predecessor, the Dimensity 8400, typically hits around 1.6 million. It could really mark a notable leap in raw processing power in its range.
The Chinese giant’s upcoming Redmi Turbo 5 could have the honor of debuting this chip on the commercial market. Xiaomi could launch the device in late 2025 or early 2026. For those outside of China, the same chip could be present in the Poco X8 Pro. The latter is rumored to be a rebranded version of the Redmi Turbo 5.
Beyond Xiaomi’s popular sub-brands, the Dimensity 8500 is set for widespread adoption. Major manufacturers like Honor and all BBK brands (including Oppo, OnePlus, Realme, Vivo, and iQOO) are reportedly planning to use this chipset in their upcoming smartphones. The Realme Neo 8 SE and iQOO Z11 Turbo are some specific models that would feature it.
It will have tough competition from Qualcomm
These leaks seem to arise with good timing. Recent reports revealed some early performance details of the alleged Snapdragon 8 Gen 5. This chip is the same one that has been previously known in the news as Snapdragon 8s Elite, Snapdragon 8 Plus, or even Snapdragon 8s Gen 5. It will be the next-gen sub-flagship offering from the North American giant. Apparently, this hardware platform will be able to deliver performance comparable to that of the powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite. Therefore, MediaTek will have to face stiff competition in the segment.
