President Trump on Friday will travel to Asia for his first visit to the region since returning to the White House. The visit comes as the government shutdown hits Day 24 with no end in sight.
Trump departs for Malaysia later this evening to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) before visiting Japan to meet with the country’s new prime minister.
Later next week, the president will head to South Korea and speak at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum. There, Trump will also meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping as tensions between both countries flare over trade.
The president’s announcement late Thursday that the U.S. would cut off trade negotiations with Canada is also likely to raise some concerns.
Senators, meanwhile, left Washington for the weekend as negotiations to reopen the federal government remain at a standstill. The House has been out for over a month.
