Voters on Tuesday are heading to the polls to cast ballots in the increasingly dramatic Democratic primary contest for New York City mayor.
The race has emerged as a nail-biter between former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) and state Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist.
New York City uses a ranked-choice voting system, which allows voters to number their top five candidates in order of preference. If no candidate earns more than 50 percent of the vote share in the initial round, the lowest-ranked candidate gets knocked out, and the votes that went to them get redistributed. The process continues until a candidate earns the majority of the vote share.
