Nobody expected the LS to evolve into this
The major Japanese automakers have come out swinging at this year’s Japan Mobility Show, with an array of jaw-dropping concepts that are complete reinventions of the nameplates attached to them. The Toyota Corolla Concept is one example, and the other is this, the Lexus LS Concept. A six-wheeled minivan previewed a few weeks ago, the LS Concept has now been shown in full, and it’s nothing like the stately but comparatively conservative LS sedan we know so well. Here’s a closer look at the LS Concept, which envisions a future Lexus flagship.

The Lexus LS Concept (with “LS” now standing for Luxury Space), is the company’s new vision of a luxury flagship. In front, the dazzling illumination—including for the LEXUS lettering—creates a confident first impression, and bears a resemblance to the new LS Coupe Concept also revealed in Tokyo.

The side view is perhaps the most dramatic, as the LS Concept features six wheels. Simon Humphries, Chief Branding Officer, said this layout helps to maximize floor space and improve packaging.

The interior paneling with horizontal lines mirrors the lines on the sliding doors. With so much on-board tech, it’s no surprise that the doors are power-operated.

At the back, the LS Concept’s tall stature is once again evident. LEXUS lettering is illuminated and the rear window is framed by extensive red lighting.

Both futuristic and practical, the cabin features dual skylights and a wide-opening tailgate.

The yoke-style steering wheel is a rarity in a Lexus, but the RZ electric crossover with steer-by-wire technology had a similar wheel, hinting that the steering tech here is the same.
Above this, there are two wide display screens, with the one at the back positioned slightly higher up for better visibility.

Up to seven people can be accommodated in a 2-2-3 configuration.

The rearmost seats can be configured to seat two, separated by a handy table and complete with convenient armrests.

Lexus admitted that traditional luxury car rules have changed, with executive sedans losing the battle with SUVs. For this reason, the LS Concept breaks completely free from the tradition of a sedan as a flagship.
