I have three teen-aged boys and finding holiday gifts that they want and will enjoy outside of new tech or cold hard cash can be a challenge some years. If you find yourself in the same boat, still looking for that WOW item to add to the new socks and toothpaste, let me suggest a parent and teen approved e-bike.
Meet the compact Schwinn Hurricane e-bike.
I know thoughts on e-bikes can vary, and I certainly have concerns of my own, but I’ve become a fan of Schwinn Hurricane e-bike for a handful of reasons.
Let’s start with the pros of an e-bike.
- They help get kids off their devices and get outside.
- They can help alleviate ALL. THE. DRIVING. parents do.
- They can help pre-teens and teens without a driver’s license get small doses of independence.
- Plus, have you ever ridden one?! They are just plain FUN. No one will complain about going for a family bike ride.
That said, the concerns surrounding e-bikes are real. The combination of the speed that many ebikes can go meshed with a still developing frontal lobe and questionable helmet usage (it’s on your head, but not buckled?!) can cause some dangerous situations. Also, many e-bikes are ridiculously expensive, with sticker prices of $1000 and up.
Which is why the Schwinn Hurricane checks so many boxes as one of the best e-bikes option for pre-teens and teens! Here are just a handful of reasons why I think you’ll love it.
It’s cool but compact.
One of the downsides of electirc bikes can be their size and weight, but the Schwinn Hurricane only comes in a sleek black, teen-approved design while clocking in at a compact 51” x 40” x 28” and 56 pounds. Which means if your adorable pre-teen does forget to fully charge it and needs a pick up from a friend’s house, you can find a way to fit it in (most) cars and actually lift it. It also won’t require its own parking space in your garage.
It goes fast….but not too fast.
Many e-bikes available to kids but designed for adults can reach speeds of 28-30 mph. The Schwinn Hurricane tops out at 17.5 mph which is fast enough to feel fun, but definitely in a more appropriate range for kids.
It’s all-terrain.
Some e-bikes have thin tires designed to stay on paved roads, but the 3” tires on the Hurricane help it perform just as well on dirt paths, compacted gravel or grass. Because my teens have shown me, part of the fun of e-bikes is definitely going off the road.
It has a broad fit range.
With three boys in the house, there is nothing that one kid gets that everyone else doesn’t want to use too. Luckily, the Schwinn Hurricane, fits kids age 13+, height 5’1” and up and up to 260 pounds ensuring that kids and adults alike can take it for a spin.
It comes with pedal-assist AND throttle.
When I got my first e-bike, one of my concerns was that I actually enjoy the exercise of pedaling. I didn’t want to just motor my way around town. I wanted to pedal, buuuuut sometimes would like a little help getting up that hill or home when I’ve ridden farther than expected. On the Hurricane, kids can choose between pedal-assist or a throttle which can help you feel like they are still getting at least some exercise, right?
It won’t break the bank.
Compared to the competition that often costs over $1000, the Schwinn Hurricane is reasonably priced at $599.99. It is definitely a heavy-hitter gift, but if you’re looking for a statement piece (and some relief from driving junior all over town) it could be a fun holiday fit.
If you’re still looking for a holiday gift, you can still get the Schwinn Hurricane delivered in time from Dick’s Sporting Goods when ordered by 12/18 (or even later if your local location has it in store!) or at Target when ordered by 12/19.
And yes, you absolutely will want to – and will have to! – give it a whirl yourself first.
