Early car engines were just awful. Before engineers had the cooling power of water figured out, drivers commonly had to fill their engine’s cooling water regularly with a hose or bucket. This cooled the engine by sloshing around and evaporating. When the water was gone, you’d have to fill it up once again. Hope you had a hose nearby.
