Porsche created a unique problem for itself when it released the 991.2 generation 911. For the first time ever, the base 911 Carrera was turbocharged, despite Porsche also selling a more powerful 911 variant called the Turbo. Marketing faux pas aside, the inclusion of turbochargers on all Carrera models made it cheaper and easier for aftermarket tuners to extract more power from them. Whereas the aftermarket used to be able to squeeze out a modest output gain from a naturally aspirated engine, they could now challenge Porsche with tuned cars that produce more power than a 911 Turbo.
