On paper, the iPhone Air seemed like a pretty amazing device. Yes, we know the battery sucks, and the price Apple is charging is ridiculous. But the engineering feat to create such an incredibly thin phone is something we have to acknowledge. Unfortunately, sales of the device have been pretty bad. So much so that there have been rumors that its successor might have been cancelled. If you’re a fan of the iPhone Air and want to see the iPhone Air 2, don’t worry, there’s still a chance it could come in 2027.
iPhone Air 2 might arrive in 2027
According to a report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his Power On newsletter, the famed Apple inside claims that Apple might not have fully cancelled its plans for the iPhone Air 2, instead pushing its launch to 2027.
Actually, to be more accurate, Gurman says that Apple had apparently never planned for the iPhone Air 2 to launch in 2026. So, to call it “delayed” would be wrong. Gurman also notes that there’s a reason the iPhone Air wasn’t called the iPhone 17 Air, as what the rumors had suggested.
This is because Apple did not want to tie the phone to its annual release schedule. This is similar to Apple’s other iPhones that have not seen yearly refreshes, like the iPhone SE series. The report also confirms what we had heard in the past, and that is the iPhone Air is more of a “technology exercise” to help Apple prototype its foldable iPhone.
As some of you might have heard, there are rumors claiming the foldable iPhone essentially looks like two iPhone Airs side by side. It won’t beat other foldables like the OPPO Find N5, which measures 4.21mm thin when unfolded, but it would be a good first attempt by the Cupertino company.
The iPhone Air problem
Even before the iPhone Air launched, there were already concerns about the size of its battery. The rumors all suggested that battery life was going to be a problem. Some even claimed that Apple had created a special MagSafe power bank just for the iPhone Air to help alleviate those problems.
Turns out, the rumors were right on the money. While the iPhone Air is a technological marvel, it’s hard to deny that it’s not very practical. These days, especially with faster internet speeds and more capable devices, the content we consume tends to drain the battery pretty fast.
This means that Apple’s decision to include such a tiny battery is a bit of a head scratcher. Hopefully Apple learns from its mistakes and the iPhone Air 2 will address those issues, but we’ll have to wait until 2027 to find out.
