The iPhone 17e, for the most part, looks very much like its predecessor, the iPhone 16e. However, there is one key difference: MagSafe. Unlike the iPhone 16e, the iPhone 17e supports MagSafe. The good news is that iPhone 16e users might be able to upgrade their devices to get the feature. This is according to a recent iPhone 17e teardown conducted by the folks at iFixit.
iPhone 17e teardown reveals MagSafe upgrade path for iPhone 16e
Like we said, the iPhone 17e looks a lot like its predecessor, the iPhone 16e. This is an extremely important detail because during the iPhone 17e teardown, iFixit discovered that the phone’s back panel is fully compatible with the iPhone 16e. In fact, iPhone 16e cases are actually compatible with the iPhone 17e. Basically, if you were to swap the iPhone 16e’s back panel with the iPhone 17e, you’d get a MagSafe upgrade. The best part is you don’t have to buy a new phone.
However, don’t get too excited just yet. For starters, the iPhone 16e does not support MagSafe natively. This means that the phone doesn’t have the built-in software to recognize MagSafe accessories. Secondly, it is unclear if swapping back panels will give users the full 15W charging speeds.
Right now, the iPhone 16e supports Qi wireless charging, which goes up to speeds of 7.5W. That’s half of what MagSafe offers. If swapping back panels will give users the full 15W, that would be a huge win. However, we think that even if it doesn’t, the convenience and ability to use MagSafe accessories is still worth considering.
Can Apple replicate its success with the iPhone 17e?
That being said, there is pressure on Apple to be successful with the iPhone 17e. When the iPhone 16e first launched, many questioned Apple’s decision. Not only were the specs kind of meh, but the prices Apple was charging did not exactly justify that. However, to everyone’s surprise, it proved to be a pretty hot seller.
We suppose at that price, Apple isn’t exactly looking to convert Android users into iOS users. It seems more targeted towards customers who want an iPhone but can’t afford or don’t want to pay for the flagship models. The iPhone 17e is built on that, just with a newer and faster chip, more base storage, and MagSafe. But everything else is nearly identical.
