Apple could introduce a radically new camera bar design in its upcoming iPhone 17 Pro models, a change that some believe draws inspiration from Google’s Pixel phones. Recently, a video showing a dummy unit of the iPhone 17 Pro surfaced with a controversial redesign. Now, a couple of photos of an alleged dummy unit of this year’s Pro model have leaked on X, which gives us a closer look at the rear design of the device.
Another leak reveals the controversial iPhone 17 Pro camera bar
Majin Bu, a gadget tipster on X, has posted two photos of dummy units of the purported iPhone 17 Pro. The images show the iPhone 17 Pro in a black colorway (we’re talking pitch black, not the 16 Pro’s Black Titanium), with a particular emphasis on the new camera bar design. As you can see, Apple is taking inspiration from Google’s Pixel series phones and is shifting from the classic camera bump design.
The iPhone 17 Pro’s camera bar design in the newly leaked images is in line with the earlier leaks. The camera module now stretches across the back of the device. For reference, the current iPhone 16 Pro variants have a square camera island sitting at the top-left corner of the handset.
It looks like Apple is sticking with the same “camera ring” layout for the successors to the iPhone 16 Pro models. The leaked iPhone 17 Pro dummy images show the LED flash and the LiDAR sensor on the far right side of the extended camera module.
Furthermore, the newly leaked photos show the camera module from the left side, which shows how thick it might be. The camera island appears to be taller than the rear of the phone, and the circular rings are even taller than both.
iPhone 17 Air’s dummy unit also leaked
Notably, the same source posted photos of an alleged dummy unit of the iPhone 17 Air model a couple of days ago. This one also has a black shade like the iPhone 17 Pro’s leaked dummy, but with a thinner camera bar. The camera bar of the iPhone 17 Air looks a lot like the camera island of the Pixel 9. It appears that Apple will put only a single camera at the rear of the iPhone 17 Air.
It’s worth adding that it’s unclear if the tipster’s dummy iPhone 17 Pro and Air models are based on the actual design. The leaker has a mixed record when it comes to leaking information about future devices. However, the design seen in the new photos is similar to what the rumors have suggested so far.
