The vast majority of social media users are familiar with voice notes. The feature lets you record what you want to say directly instead of typing it. Now, Meta is looking to make the function a bit more entertaining. Instagram has officially begun rolling out AI Voice Effects in the app, a new feature that allows users to modify their voice recordings within direct messages.
Currently live in markets like India, this update introduces eight distinct AI-powered filters. Whether you want to sound like a Chipmunk, a Robot, or even a Demon, the tool provides a simple way to inject some personality into private conversations. Other available styles include Alien, Underwater, Stadium, Wobble, and Fishbowl.
Meet Instagram’s new AI filters for voice notes
Users can find these effects directly within the voice notes option in any DM thread. After tapping the record button, a new “AI Voice Effects” option appears. This allows you to record your message and then preview how it sounds with different filters before hitting send.
One of the more interactive elements of this update is how it functions for the recipient. When you receive a modified voice note, Instagram displays the name of the effect used. If you like the sound of it, you can simply tap the effect name to apply it to your own reply.
Apps like Snapchat and TikTok have long offered audio manipulation for public posts. However, Instagram is specifically targeting your DMs.
Other AI improvements are on the way
This update is just one piece of a much larger AI roadmap for the platform. As noted by Instagram’s official announcements, the company is also experimenting with more advanced generative tools. One rumored project, internally called “Create My Likeness,” could eventually allow users to generate entirely new images or videos based on their own appearance using AI prompts.
If you don’t see the option in your chat window yet, ensure your app is updated to the latest version. As with most Meta rollouts, the feature is expected to expand to more regions following its initial launch phase.
