Since its launch in May, Sony’s latest flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1 VII, has faced significant power failure issues. The company recently broke its silence about the phone’s problems, after halting sales completely in many markets worldwide. After launching a major investigation into the issue, Sony has now announced a free replacement program for the Xperia 1 VII buyers.
Sony will replace your affected Xperia 1 VII for free — Here’s how to apply
In a post on the Sony UK support website, the brand has announced that it has identified potential power failure issues with the Xperia 1 VII flagship offering. It appears that the issues have plagued a select number of units of the handset globally, and the company has “successfully identified” every affected smartphone.
If you are also facing power issues with your Xperia 1 VII, then Sony will provide a replacement program starting from July 21st, 2025. To take part in the replacement program, you’ll need to verify your handset’s IMEI number on a dedicated validation portal.
If you’ve purchased your Xperia 1 VII from Sony’s online store, the brand will reach out to you directly in the coming days. If you purchased through another retailer, you must contact your nearest Sony authorized service center, as mentioned on the support website.
The brand also reminds affected consumers to back up their data before sending their phones for replacement. Sony will provide more details on the matter once the Xperia 1 VII replacement program kicks off on upcoming Monday.
What’s causing power failures on the Xperia 1 VII?
Sony has concluded that the manufacturing process may have caused the failure of the circuit board in a smaller number of Xperia 1 VII units. This could potentially result in power-related problems. It’s worth mentioning that the company has changed the manufacturing process immediately to ensure this issue doesn’t occur again.
So, the faulty circuit boards were the main reason behind the unexpected power-offs, restarts, and inability to power on issues on Sony’s latest flagship. That said, Sony mentioned that if your device is fine and its IMEI number doesn’t match with the affected units on the brand’s website, you can continue to enjoy your phone.
