Disney fully acquired Hulu, the streaming service, almost a couple of months ago after purchasing Comcast’s remaining one-third stake in it. Now, Disney is phasing out the standalone Hulu app to integrate all the platform’s content into Disney+. Furthermore, the company will offer a unified app at some point next year. While Disney+ already offers Hulu content, the two have remained separate—until now.
Viewers will soon be streaming Disney+ and Hulu in the same app
According to Variety, Disney shared the news about phasing out the standalone Hulu app during this week’s earnings call. The company will shut down the standalone app, which has been in existence for more than 15 years. Instead, the main Disney+ application will fully integrate Hulu content.
A Disney representative stated that viewers will still be able to purchase a standalone subscription to Hulu’s service, as well as a standalone Disney+ plan. The company says that the single Disney+ app with Hulu will offer an “improved consumer experience,” which will lower churn.
“This will create an impressive package of entertainment, pairing the highest caliber brands and franchises, great general entertainment kids, programming news and industry leading live sports content all in a single app,” Disney CEO Bob Iger said during the earnings call. Furthermore, Iger said that the move would lead to “greater advertising revenue potential” by allowing Disney to package ad sales together more efficiently.
“Hulu” brand will replace the “Star” tile in Disney+ global markets
Apart from phasing out the standalone Hulu app, Disney said that the Hulu brand will replace the Star tile in the Disney+ service’s international markets. The new option will offer users more choice and convenience, said the company. Additionally, Disney will implement improvements within the Disney+ app. These will include new features and a more personalized homepage.
Separately, Disney said that it’ll no longer provide details on subscriber numbers for its streaming service. For now, Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions totaled 183 million. Major streaming giants like Netflix and Apple already avoid reporting subscriber numbers.
