Huawei is doing its part to tackle the diabetes problem with a new diabetes detection feature for its smartwatches. Diabetes is a major health issue, and it impacts hundreds of millions of adults worldwide. That’s enough people to warrant better ways to catch this type of disease early on, so Huawei set out to make that possible. The company believes it has achieved that.
At the World Health Expo Dubai 2026, Huawei revealed a feature for its wearables that uses Photoplethysmography and a variety of advanced sensors to detect blood sugar-related trends, which could point to possible early signs of diabetes risks. By alerting users to these trends, people who might be at risk of diabetes can proactively seek assistance from a physician. By talking to a physician, people might be able to catch the disease early on and better manage it.
Huawei’s new diabetes detection feature is available on the Huawei Watch GT 6 Pro
When it comes to availability, Huawei says this new feature is available on the Huawei Watch GT 6 Pro. So far, this is the only model that supports it. However, it should be available on newer models in the future as well. Users who have the Huawei Watch GT 6 Pro will need to download an update for the device to get this feature, and the update should already be available.
To activate it, users reportedly need to wear the watch for three to fourteen days. Three days seems to be a minimum, but wearing it for fourteen days likely gets more accurate data. Or at least more data for the feature to work with. Once that data is recorded, the feature labels the blood sugar-related trends as low, medium, or high risk factors. The goal here, Huawei says, is not to tell people if they have diabetes. Rather, it’s to alert users of possible risk factors so that they can seek help from professionals.
While this is only currently available on the Huawei Watch GT 6 Pro, if you aren’t concerned with diabetes detection, some of the best smartwatches offer a variety of other useful health and wellness features that might be a good fit for your lifestyle.
