House Progressive Caucus Chair Greg Casar (D-Texas) joined President Trump’s social media platform Truth Social on Wednesday in an effort to advocate against potential cuts to Medicaid in Trump’s legislative agenda.
Casar introduced himself as a “proud progressive Democrat” in his first post on the platform, acknowledging that most users on the platform are more conservative than him.
“But right now House Republicans are trying to pass the biggest Medicaid cut in American history (while giving billionaires tax breaks), and that will hit all Americans regardless of party or ideology,” Casar wrote. “Even if you disagree with me on some issues, if you oppose cutting healthcare and want to take back our government from the billionaire class, I want to talk to you.”
Casar included a link to an op-ed in Fox News in which he further explains his reasoning to join the platform.
The move is part of a broader strategy some Democrats have implemented to reach voters outside of their base on more conservative territory. Casar, who was elected in 2022, made his Fox News debut in March.
Casar is not the first Democratic lawmaker to join Truth Social. Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) joined the platform after Trump was elected last year, but he has recently become a target of criticism from Democrats.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) is in the process of unifying his Republican conference to pass Trump’s legislative agenda, which would extend Trump’s tax cuts and boost his border funding priorities while reforming Medicaid and food assistance programs. Democrats have railed against the legislation, arguing it would cut government assistance programs.
