The resources that go into developing a new engine are astronomical. Engines need to fall in line with a long list of requirements set forth by organizations like the NHTSA and the EPA, facilities need to be retooled, or built from scratch, to produce the new engines, and automakers have to run extensive tests to ensure that the product is safe and dependable. So, you can’t blame these companies for doing everything they can to keep an engine family going for as long as possible before replacing it with a brand-new powerplant.
