After months of controversy and worldwide scrutiny, Grok finally bans the illegal porn generation on the platform. X has confirmed that it has now restricted Grok from producing child sexual abuse material and non-consensual explicit images. This decision follows global criticism, legal orders from the government, and international bans over how the AI tool was used.
Grok finally bans illegal porn and explicit image generation
Elon Musk’s social media firm X confirms that Grok can no longer generate non-consensual explicit images. The company labels the move as a ‘safety measure,’ however, its limited scope has raised questions about accountability, enforcement, and the future of AI image generation.
The problem started escalating when some users started using Grok to generate pornographic images from real photographs, including content involving children. This attracted warnings from several countries’ governments and criticism from the users. But despite that, the feature remained accessible. Elon Musk even dismissed the concerns initially. He further described the system as ‘humorous’, before later denying misuse altogether.
This raises concerns over misuses of AI tools
Once the illegal images became increasingly popular, several governments stepped in to regulate the tool. Indonesia and Malaysia enacted Grok bans. The United Kingdom explored regulatory options to control it, and US lawmakers further questioned whether companies were enabling illegal porn through inaction.
In an attempt to control things, X later announced that it has now restricted Grok to prevent explicit image creation involving real people. The company said the changes apply to all users, including paying subscribers. It further emphasized that it follows a zero-tolerance policy. However, the change was focused heavily on compliance rather than responsibility. It stresses that restrictions might only apply in jurisdictions where such Generation activity is illegal. It’s still unclear whether the ban is universal or based on geography. The company has not differentiated between allowed and restricted content either.
