Google has started rolling out a rather odd update to Gboard app. The company now allows you to hide the period and comma keys in Gboard completely. Some of you may welcome this change, but it’s an odd change to say the least.
Google now allows Gboard users to ditch comma & period keys completely
Many people are not using punctuation marks enough as is, which makes reading their sentences a pain. Using commas and periods should be promoted, and yet Google now allows users to ditch them completely.
The change is visible in both stable and beta channels with Gboard 16.0+. You can now head over to Gboard Settings -> Preferences to find the ‘Comma key’ and ‘Period key’ toggles. They are enabled by default, but you can change that.
As shown below, if you turn them off, you’ll see only the ‘?123’ key, followed by a space bar, and the enter key. Both the comma key with emoticons and the period key will be completely removed from the keyboard.

This change offers a cleaner look, but at what cost?
Yes, this does give the keyboard a cleaner look, but at what cost? You will still be able to hit the space bar twice to use a period, but in order to access a comma, you’ll need to tap the symbols key and find it there.
This change follows the recent ‘Font size’ update that Google issued. That update allowed users to increase the font size on Gboard. So, if you have trouble seeing the letters on the keyboard, this update will be very useful to you.
While this change is rolling out as we speak, not all of you will have it at the moment. Some of you may have to wait a bit. We’re hoping you’re not as eager to remove comma and period keys from your Gboard, but if you are, be patient.
