Google wants to fix storage woes with a new feature, instead of offering more than 128GB of storage on its base Pixels.
According to Android Authority, Google is working on a feature that is part of the Automatic backup, which would allow it to copy your phone’s photos, videos, and audio to your PC without using cloud storage.
The feature apparently shows up in the Quick Share settings page, currently. It has a short description saying “Back up your photos with devices in your household”. It appears that Google won’t be uploading these to Google Photos, but instead syncing them with your phone and computer automatically, on your own WiFi network.
It will allow you to choose what is backed up, including photos from your camera, videos from your camera, and audio files.
You can also choose to remove the PC from the backup options if you wish, or choose to back up now if you’re about to factory reset your device.
More back up space without paying for Google One
While cloud storage is pretty cheap these days – Google is giving you 5TB of space for just $20/month right now – not everyone wants to pay for it. Or can afford to pay for it. Google does give you 15GB of Google One Storage for free, however. So backing up your photos, videos and audio files to your PC is actually a really good way to get around this, and to relieve users of the dreaded “Storage full” notifications.
Though, another way Google could get around this is by including more than 128GB of storage. Let’s face it, all of Google’s competitors have gotten rid of 128GB as their base storage – even Apple has on the iPhone 17e. But the Pixel 11 is expected to continue with the same 128GB of storage at its base level, with a $100 upcharge for 256GB.
