Google recently announced a significant update for Google TV, integrating new Gemini features designed to turn the living room screen into a more active, information-heavy hub this 2026. This way, the entertainment experience stops being mostly passive. Now, your television is becoming an AI-powered assistant that can explain complex topics or catch you up on the latest game scores.
The rollout is starting today for users in the U.S. and Canada. It focuses on three specific areas: visual assistance, educational “deep dives,” and curated sports summaries.
Interactive learning on the big screen
The most ambitious addition is a feature called “Deep Dives.” This tool allows families to use the TV as a collaborative educational platform. If you are curious about a topic—ranging from the economics of a specific industry to the health benefits of a particular diet—Gemini provides a narrated, visual walkthrough.
Beyond just static search results, these are interactive sessions that include guided follow-up questions. This positions Google TV as a competitor to educational YouTube channels, but with a layer of AI customization that lets you steer the conversation.
Scorecards and sports briefs
For sports fans, Google is expanding its existing “news briefs” concept into the athletic arena. Sports Briefs will provide narrated overviews of in-season leagues, starting with major organizations like the NBA, NHL, MLB, and MLS.
Instead of checking your phone for highlights, you can ask Gemini for a quick summary of last night’s games or a live scorecard. This feature is rolling out now in the U.S., with broader device support expected later this spring.
A more visual assistant
The general voice assistant is also getting a facelift. When you ask a question now, Gemini adapts its response with a mix of videos and text. If you ask for a recipe, it might pull up a video tutorial; if you ask for a movie recommendation, it will provide a richer visual gallery than before.
While North American users are the first to see these changes, Google confirmed that the Gemini voice assistant for Google TV will expand to Australia, New Zealand, and Great Britain starting this spring. You can expect it to reach more regions later this year.
