Google Lens has always been one of the cooler features/products from Google. Even before AI, it was pretty amazing at what it could do. Then, Google decided to give it super powers, which resulted in Circle to Search. Now, Google is making Circle to Search even more indispensable with a new translate feature that works as you scroll through a website.
Circle to Search now translates as you scroll
Now, browsers like Chrome already offer built-in translation tools. However, it mostly works on text and you have to be using Chrome. But what if you’re using a different app, like Instagram, Facebook, or reading comics? That’s where the new Circle to Search translate feature comes in, which translates what you see on your screen while you scroll through it.
Google says that translation is one of the most-used features in Circle to Search. However, the problem is that users need to restart the process every time the content on your device’s screen changed. This means that if you’re browsing a virtual menu while traveling overseas, you’ll have to restart Circle to Search whenever you turn to the next page.
According to Google, “With this update, the experience is continuous: Simply long-press the home button or navigation bar to start Circle to Search, tap the ‘Translate’ icon and press ‘scroll and translate.’ As you scroll down the page, or even switch apps, the text will continue to translate, so there’s no interruption.”
As for its availability, Google says, “This update will begin rolling out this week on Android, starting with select Samsung Galaxy devices.”
The evolution of Circle to Search
Circle to Search first made its debut in 2024. At that time, it was exclusive to Google’s Pixel phones and Samsung devices, thanks to Samsung’s close partnership with Google. Since then, the feature has slowly made its way onto the devices from other Android brands.
While Google Lens and Circle to Search share some similarities in their functionality, they are different. Firstly, Google Lens is a separate standalone app. Circle to Search, on the other hand, is baked into Android itself. This means that as long as you own a compatible phone, you can use it.
Also, Circle to Search’s AI capabilities are more contextual, which will yield more meaningful results. It is part of Google’s effort to integrate AI more naturally into Android.
