Ever wanted to just point your phone at something and ask a question? Google‘s new Search Live feature, now officially available to all users in the U.S., lets you do exactly that. This new tool, which is powered by AI, combines the power of Google Search with your phone’s camera and microphone to give you answers in real time. It’s an upgrade to how we use search, allowing for a more natural and interactive experience.
You can access Search Live in a couple of different ways. In the Google app, just tap the new “Live” icon next to the “AI Mode” pill under the search bar. If you’re already using Google Lens, you’ll see a new “Live” option at the bottom of the screen. From there, you can start talking to Google and sharing what your camera sees. Then, you’ll get instant verbal responses and web links as you go.
Google Search Live vs. Gemini: Key differences
If this sounds familiar, it’s because Search Live works a lot like Gemini Live. However, there is a key difference. Gemini Live, as a personal assistant, is designed to be a purely conversational AI. On the other hand, Search Live stays true to its roots as a search tool. As you ask questions, Search Live will not only give you an immediate verbal answer but also provide a carousel of relevant web links on your screen. This means you get quick guidance while still being able to dive deeper into the information online.
This new tool targets all kinds of situations where typing is just too slow. For example, if you’re trying to set up a new home theater system and you can’t figure out where a specific cable goes, you can simply point your camera at the back of the TV and ask. Search will understand the visual context and guide you step-by-step.
It’s also great for learning. If you’re trying to master a new skill like making a perfect cup of matcha tea, Search Live can act as a personal expert advisor. Just point your camera at your tools and ask what each one is for, or get suggestions for low-sugar ingredients to use. This kind of hands-on, real-time help is what makes Search Live a game-changer for everyday situations.
