Google is planning to finally push out a GPU driver update to the Pixel 10 series. Since launch, and even before launch, while we were testing all four phones, the GPU has severely lagged behind the competition and even the Pixel 9 series. In fact, on Geekbench, the GPU score is about half of what the Pixel 9 was.
A big reason for this is that Google switched over to a PowerVR GPU on the Pixel 10 series with the Tensor G5. It’s using the PowerVR DXT-48-1536 GPU, which is also not supported by Genshin Impact, which is why many users have had problems with that game.
Some Reddit users were able to dig around and find out that some outdated GPU drivers were the likely reason for these issues with the Pixel 10. It ships with an outdated driver, v24.3 and tha doesn’t even support Android 16 – the version of Android that Pixel 10 shipped on. There was a new driver, v25.1, released shortly after the Android 16 launch.
Google did say in a statement:
We are continuing to improve driver quality in our monthly and quarterly system updates. For example, the most recent September and October patch releases included driver improvements. In future releases we are planning further GPU driver updates.
Could this update fix all of Google’s GPU problems?
It’s unlikely that this would fix all of the issues with this GPU on the Google Pixel 10 series, but it should make a pretty big difference. The issues with Genshin Impact will likely remain, as the game has stopped supporting PowerVR GPUs. While the game will still load up and play, some graphics won’t work properly.
It’ll be interesting to see how much of a difference this driver makes in benchmarks when the update rolls out. It’ll likely come with the November update.
