Google’s Nano Banana AI-image generation tech is a great way to create static images using natural language prompts. But what if you wanted more? That’s where Google’s Genie 3 comes in. It’s an AI model that generates 3D environments from text prompts, creating worlds instead of static flat images. Now, it looks like you actually get to try it with the launch of Google Project Genie.
Google launches Project Genie
The Google Project Genie is basically the user-facing version of the tech. It is powered by Genie 3, but now you get to take it for a spin in a web app prototype. It also takes advantage of Google’s Gemini AI model as well as Nano Banana.
According to Google, how Project Genie works is that you first start with something called “World Sketching.” This is basically where you start building your world. You can use natural language prompts to describe what you want to see. Alternatively, you can also upload images to give the AI model a better idea of what you had in mind.
The company says that they have integrated the World Sketching feature into Nano Banana, so you can use that first to start planning out your ideas before getting Project Genie to put it all together.
After that, you have “World exploration,” where, as you move through the world, the AI can generate the path ahead for you. Think of it like an open-world game, except that in this case, there are no limitations. Lastly, there’s also a “World remixing” feature. This allows users to take other “worlds” and build on their prompts.
So, who gets to use it?
If Project Genie sounds exciting, we have some bad news. Yes, Google is rolling it out to users, but it is only available to AI Ultra subscribers in the US. This is Google’s top-of-the-line AI subscription plan, and it costs a whopping $250 a month. This puts it well out of reach for the majority of users.
Even then, there are some limitations with users being limited to 60-second sessions. The worlds are also generated in 720p resolution, so it’s not exactly going to be the sharpest. Also, interaction rates are 20-24 frames per second, so not particularly smooth. However, it is an amazing piece of tech, assuming it works as advertised.
