Google has announced that it’ll soon roll out a major update for the Play Games service, which will bring Steam-inspired public profiles for Android and Windows gamers. The new Play Games profiles will have various details, like the gaming stats, milestones, and new social features.
The new Google Play Games profiles will be visible to the public, just like Steam
Google Play Games already has profiles, but they aren’t easily accessible by your friends, and lack any social features. These profiles mainly just display your achievements currently. However, after the update, your profile will showcase your gaming stats and milestones from the games you’ve installed from Google Play, and you can choose to share these stats with the public or your friends.
Google hasn’t provided many details of the new update, but the new Play Games profiles features sound a lot like what the Steam service offers to its users. It appears that, much like Steam, Google Play Games users will be able to see which games they’ve played and the progress they’ve made so far.
The update will respect your profile privacy settings
It’s worth mentioning that Google Play Games will respect your existing profile visibility setting. This means that if you’ve currently set your profile “visible to everyone,” Google will maintain this preference for you. Similar to Steam, Google Play Games will allow you to change your profile settings to hide your gaming data from public view.
Google has explained the new privacy settings on a support page in detail. If users no longer want a Play Games profile, they can easily delete it entirely along with the associated games data. The firm says that it will be collecting usage data of titles you’ve installed or played previously, and it may pass this information to developers.
Google will start rolling out the new update for the Play Games service to most users globally on September 23. People in the EU and the UK will find the new profile features on October 1.
