uAs functional as Android’s interface is, keeping the same design for too long gets stale. Plus, I am a big believer that everything can always be improved upon. In Google’s case, the company refreshed Android’s design language with Material 3 Expressive, and that change is now making its way onto the Phone app.
Phone app gets Material 3 Expressive revamp
We regularly use the phone app, especially if we make many calls. So, it’s only natural that it is one of the first few native Android apps to get the update. So far, based on the changes, Google has not touched the four-tab button bar except to make it darker. The “Search contacts” field has also remained unchanged.
However, some of the more noticeable changes are in the Recents tab. All calls are now placed in a rectangular card with rounded corners. The number pad has also been updated slightly, with the background sheet showing rounded corners. Google has also updated the “Incoming call gesture” setting. Users can choose between “Single tap” or “Horizontal swipe” gestures.
The “Single tap” feature is straightforward. When you get a call, tap the Answer or Decline button. However, the “Horizontal Swipe” feature lets you swipe either to the left to decline a call or to the right to answer it. All in all, the change in the UI is subtle, but it definitely feels fresh. Granted, most of us might not pay much attention to these sorts of things, but it’s good to see Google making updates to keep Android fresh and modern.
Other updated apps
The Android phone app isn’t the only app Google is giving the Material 3 Expressive treatment. The company previously rolled out a similar update to Gmail. Recently leaked images also suggest that Google plans to make similar changes to the Pixel Camera app, although that hasn’t rolled out yet.
That being said, not all of you might have seen the changes to the Phone app yet. Right now, it is part of the beta version 180 and isn’t widely available yet. So, if anything, this is a sneak peek of what’s to come. We don’t know when Google plans to push it out to the stable channel yet, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled.
