Recent leaks revealed that Google was preparing a more convenient way to migrate to Gemini. Well, it seems the company had already made significant progress, as it was officially announced shortly after. Google is introducing a new feature that allows users to import chat history and memories from competitors like ChatGPT and Claude directly into Gemini.
This feature is great for avoiding the process of “introducing yourself” to an AI. In other words, you’ll no longer have to manually “explain” all your tastes, preferences, habits, etc., to the new chatbot so it can learn them over time.
How Google Gemini’s AI chat migration tool works
The process is divided into two distinct methods. The first is “Importing Chats,” which handles your full conversation history. Users can export their data from ChatGPT or Claude as a .zip file and upload it to a dedicated portal at gemini.google.com/import.
These imported conversations appear in the Gemini side panel with a specific icon to distinguish them from native chats. You can search through them or delete entire batches if you decide you no longer need that specific history. Currently, the system supports up to five .zip files per day, with a size limit of 5 GB each.
The second feature is “Importing Memory.” This one targets those who have spent time “teaching” an AI their specific preferences. Gemini provides a suggested prompt that you need to copy and paste into your old AI app. That app then generates a summary of your key facts and context, which you simply paste back into Gemini to get it up to speed instantly.
“Past chats” is now “Memory”
Google is also rebranding its “past chats” feature to simply “Memory” to reflect this evolution. The goal is to create a more cohesive assistant that combines these imported insights with data from Google services like Gmail, Photos, and Search—provided you’ve granted the necessary permissions.
For example, if you previously researched hotels for a trip in another app, Gemini can now access that context to help you finalize your itinerary without you having to re-explain your requirements.
This feature is currently rolling out globally. However, it is not yet available in the EEA, Switzerland, or the United Kingdom due to local data regulations. For everyone else, the tools are appearing under the “Settings & Help” gear in the Gemini web interface.
