Listen, we’re all adults here, so if you’ve ever received a spicy photo or video from your partner, or maybe just some NSFW stuff from your friends, we get it. However, accidentally opening them in public is just embarrassing. Thankfully, it looks like Google Messages is getting a new feature that blurs sensitive photos and videos, saving you a bit of public embarrassment.
Google Messages will blur sensitive photos and videos
Google Messages already had the ability to blur explicit photos automatically. But now, it’s extending that protection to videos as well. According to an Android Authority report, the Sensitive Content Warnings feature will now detect and blur nudity in videos. This is part of the October 2025 Play Services update. This change will give users a heads-up before they accidentally play something they shouldn’t in the middle of a crowded subway.
If you’re worried that Google is somehow analyzing your photos and videos in the cloud, don’t. As you can see in the caption in the screenshot, the feature works entirely on your device. Videos don’t get uploaded to the cloud or sent anywhere for analysis, which means your privacy stays intact. Google uses SafetyCore, an Android system built specifically for identifying nudity in images, and it’s now been extended to handle video content too. When explicit content is detected, the video gets blurred automatically, and you’ll see an option to delete it before deciding whether to view it.

Remember, it’s opt-in
That being said, just because the feature is rolling out doesn’t mean it’s enabled automatically. It appears that this is an opt-in feature. It isn’t something that turns on by itself. You’ll need to manually enable the feature in Google Messages by heading to Protection and Safety in the settings. From there, head on over to Messages settings > Protection and safety > Manage sensitive content warnings.Â
Another thing worth noting is that the blur system doesn’t currently cover GIFs. So, if you’re sending or receiving spicy GIFs, you’ll still need to be careful with those. Like we said, this new feature is part of the October 2025 Play Services update v25.39. If you’re running an older build, you’ll have to update it to get access to this feature.
