Google Messages is one of the most widely used messaging apps on Android. However, it isn’t immune to annoying bugs. One frustrating bug that causes the camera and gallery overlay to disappear the moment the phone tilts into landscape mode has been there for a long time. But finally, a bug fix for the following issue is coming soon to Google Messages.
A long-awaited Google Messages bug fix looks to be coming
According to an APK teardown done by the folks at Android Authority, a fix for the rotation-triggered gallery glitch is currently in development. The patch was spotted in the Google Messages beta version 20251114. The source was able to manually activate the patch. This confirms that the tech giant has updated both the portrait and landscape UIs for the camera and gallery picker.
In the latest stable version, users would see a “Rotate device to access gallery” warning when the app detects a slight angle change. While this bug doesn’t affect the functionality of the app. It can make the file-sharing process frustrating, especially while lying down on a bed or holding a phone at an angle.
It took Google months to acknowledge and patch the issue
The issue was reported by the users as far back as June. The exact cause behind the bug remains a mystery. However, it would consistently break the gallery preview until the phone is rotated to an upright or portrait position. Thankfully, a patch finally seems to be under development.
Aside from fixing the bug, Google has also redesigned the gallery preview screen. It now shows up to six images fully, with a partial preview of three more, making it easier to browse photos without opening the full gallery. The landscape preview has been updated as well. However, the app still does not allow users to browse media in landscape mode. Since the bug fix was spotted in the beta version, it’s hard to predict any timeline for its stable release.
