Google has announced that Meet is now available on Apple CarPlay. However, Android Auto support will arrive “soon.” Meet on Apple CarPlay will allow users to stay connected hands-free and join meetings safely while on the road. However, there are certain limitations.
Google Meet is now available on Apple CarPlay
Google, in a blog post, says that the feature is designed to provide a seamless transition from your iOS device to your vehicle, where you can join a meeting with a single tap. That said, Google Meet calls on CarPlay are audio-only. The company says that your video is automatically off, and you won’t see the incoming video content. This is coming from a safety point of view.
Users can listen and respond to the meeting, with controls limited to just mute and unmute, and to leave the meeting. Users won’t be able to see presentations or other participants on the car display. Furthermore, Google also notes that your mic may be muted by default when you join a large meeting.
On your Apple CarPlay display, the homepage will show all your upcoming meetings. From the list, you can select a meeting to join. Users can only join scheduled meetings from their dashboard. That means they can’t create new ones. Additionally, if you’re the host, you won’t be able to accept or reject participants from the car’s display.
Support for Android Auto is coming soon
Google adds that to meet the safety standards while driving, users can’t use features like Hand Raise, Q&A, and Polls. The company suggests that you park the car and log in from the Google Meet app on your phone if you really want video for a meeting or these other features. It says that you’ll then join the meeting on both your iPhone and your car display.
To use Google Meet on Apple CarPlay, download the latest version of the app from the App Store and grant the necessary permissions. Google has already started rolling out the feature, and it may take up to 15 days to show up. The feature will be available for all Workspace and individual customers.
