Our phones have become one of the most valuable assets, containing our images, files, e-documents, and much more. And that’s why we always insist upon having a stronger security system for the device, but convenient. This is where Google’s Android Identity Check comes into play. It aims to provide additional security, especially when the device is outside the “safe zone”.
Android Identity Check will use the watch’s data to strengthen security
It was previously reported that Google is testing a way to use your smartwatch as a trusted signal in the Android Identity Check. However, details regarding how exactly it would work were a mystery. But we now have some additional information about the upcoming change, all thanks to the APK teardown by Android Authority.
In the last beta, Google had enabled the Android Identity Check to verify your watch as a source of data. The system bypasses the biometric login whenever it detects that the device is in a “trusted location”. It will now confidently bypass security if it detects the paired smartwatch is in the proximity.
The Identity Check is becoming more seamless
Using the trusted location to bypass the security was good, but it doesn’t work when we are outside the location. This is where the new change is going to become helpful. It will unlock the device or bypass the security whenever the Android Identity Check confirms the presence of the paired watch. It essentially means that your watch is now a source of two-factor authentication for your smartphone.
However, we suspect how it would secure the device in case of theft, assuming both your device and watch are stolen. Anyway, the V2 of the Identity Check is in the works and is tipped to get possible expansion and advanced security while maintaining the same level of convenience.
