Last month, we talked about Google’s $700 million settlement related to buying apps and in-app purchases over the past 7 years. About 102 million people are eligible to get a piece of that, and things just went south for some of them. Reports on Reddit claim that Gmail is sending some of those class action settlement notices to the spam folder.
Google’s $700 million settlement emails are somehow ending up in spam
One user who reported this received an email on January 1, 2026. That was an email from a law firm notifying him of a class-action antitrust settlement against Google, the one I mentioned initially. Well, that email ended up in the spam folder, for whatever reason.
He then got curious and found a bunch of other similar reports on Reddit, as it seems he’s not the only one this has happened to. He claims Google is trying to hide the notice from users.
While this does look suspicious, it could be just a mistake in Google’s spam content filtration system. Either way, it does look very suspicious, in all honesty. Not many users pay attention to emails that go into spam, as they’re usually just that… spam emails.
One of the users whose email ended up in spam said so himself. He said: “I’m a fairly skeptical guy and know my way around a couple of scams, so the fact that this went straight to spam wasn’t a good sign for me.” Ultimately, however, he figured out this was real. Comments on those three separate Reddit threads also show that more people had the same issue.
This whole lawsuit was about Google’s Play Store monopoly practices
This whole lawsuit was about Google Play Store monopoly practices. It focused on how Google ran Google Play Store since 2016. Google was accused of using contracts to stop other app stores from coming preloaded on Android phones.
The lawsuit also claimed that Google paid off developers who might’ve built competing stores and made it cumbersome to download apps from anywhere else besides the Google Play Store.
Such practices allowed Google to charge developers up to 30% on every app purchase and in-app purchase transaction. Those costs were then passed onto consumers, of course, by the developers.
Google decided to settle this case. Before you get excited about how much money you’ll get, do note that it’ll be less than $10, probably.
