It appears that scripted automations in Google Home are broken for some users. After a Reddit user posted about scripted automations failing on Tuesday (January 27th), more users responded to the post telling a similar story. Users complain that their automations stopped working sometime yesterday, and there doesn’t seem to be any possible explanation for what’s causing this.
Google Home’s scripted automations are reportedly broken
Going into details, Reddit user Tkemalediction posted on the Google Home subreddit that all their scripted automations, ones made using Google Home’s YAML script editor, had stopped working. These were apparently working fine previously. Comments to the post report a similar behaviour. It’s not clear what’s causing this issue at the moment. Fortunately, Automations that you create in other ways, like through Gemini or the Home app’s automations UI, seem unaffected.
Google Home got a major automation update at the beginning of this month. This expanded Automations with smarter triggers, conditions, and actions. But then this was a couple of weeks ago, and the issue with scripted automations surfaced only yesterday.
There’s a workaround for the issue
There seems to be a workaround for the issue, as suggested by Reddit user TheStriker995. Open the broken scripted routine in the Google Home app or editor, and add a simple “OK Google” starter to the routine. Save the routine with this extra starter, then edit it again to remove the “dummy” starter that you added. This will apparently get the routine working again. One user acknowledged that this workaround worked for them.
Google has yet to respond to the new scripted automation failure, but we’ll update if we hear more. Last week, Google Home users reported that smart lights and switches were appearing offline in the app. It’s not clear whether the latest issue is related. But for what it’s worth, Google acknowledged the smart lights issue and said that it’s working on a fix.
Additionally, earlier this month, multiple users complained that the Gemini update for their Google Home wasn’t a delight. They note that Gemini on their Home devices couldn’t perform simple tasks like setting alarms or controlling smart lights. They note that the Gemini update broke their smart home automations.
