Google has finally started rolling out support for pinned tabs in the Chrome browser for Android users. The feature first appeared back in December last year. With the new update, users will be able to keep important webpages in an easily accessible position within the browser’s tab grid. It lets frequently used sites stay fixed at the top of the interface. The change improves the overall user experience and usability factor of the mobile browser.
Chrome for Android finally gets the pinned tabs feature
The newly added pinned tabs feature appears directly within the tab grid view. Users can long-press on any tab card to reveal a “Pin tab” option located just above the Close tab command. Once selected, the webpage moves directly to the front of the grid. Google has also replaced the traditional close icon with a pin symbol. This reduces the chance of accidental closure.
Users can no longer swipe to dismiss pinned pages from the grid, adding a welcome layer of protection against accidental closes. Further, if users scroll away from the top of the grid, a new docked carousel keeps Pinned Tabs visible. This horizontal strip displays favicons alongside page names. The carousel scrolls smoothly, and tapping a site opens it immediately. The animation feels responsive and polished. The overall transition and UI design are in line with the latest Material 3 Expressive design language of Android.
A step closer to matching the desktop browsing experience
The new pinned tabs feature is accessible in the latest Chrome version 144. The feature brings mobile browsing a step closer to the desktop experience. Pinned tab is a useful feature. Users across the globe use the tool to manage workflows and keep essential content ready at all times. Adding the feature to the smartphone not only increase producivity but also creates a more consistent experience across devices.
