Switching mobile browsers can be a painful experience. It gets even worse when we talk about users wanting to switch from Safari to Chrome on iOS. Apple follows its usual behavior of restricting how data moves between apps, turning a simple change into a multi-step chore. But that seems to be changing now. Google is reportedly testing a guided import feature that lets any Safari user move data to Chrome without the need for a desktop.
iOS users can finally switch from Safari to Chrome without desktop
According to the source, the new guided import feature appears in the latest Chrome beta for iOS. It relies on Apple’s export browsing data option. To import their data, users should first open Safari and select what they want to move, then save it as a ZIP file. Once done, they can go the import settings on Chrome, which will automatically launch a guided flow that explains every step carefully. The best part is that the data import process doesn’t need a desktop. Everything can be done on the iPhone alone.
While importing the data, users can choose what they want to transfer and what they do not. Every basic data, such as bookmarks, browsing history, saved passwords, and even stored payment cards, can be imported. Once the process is finished, the data is now tied to the specific Google accounts. Users may then enable data sync across their devices.
Google ensures that the process is safe and reliable
Once the import process is done, a security prompt appears that warns that the ZIP file contains private information. It offers an option to delete the file immediately. This suggests that Google not only wants to ease the transfer method but also wants to make the process secure. The new import option does not force users to switch, but makes trying a different browser far less intimidating on an iPhone.
Moreover, do note that the feature is currently available only on the Chrome beta. There’s currently no official word on the stable release yet. Usually, the company rolls out the feature to the public after a few weeks of testing.
