Google just inadvertently leaked its upcoming desktop mode for Android. This is one of the issues that companies run into with open-source software that has a public bug tracker, as Android has. A bug report on the Chromium Issue Tracker leaked the whole interface.
The said report was published on Tuesday and includes screen captures from the HP Elite Dragonfly 13.5 Chromebook, which has the board/codename “Brya(Redrix)”. The report has since been removed from being publicly viewable. So the videos in this post come from 9to5Google who was able to grab these before they were removed.
Of course, this is only showing us what Chrome looks like in this Android Desktop Mode, and it looks very similar to what you’d find on a foldable these days. Though there does appear to be a drop-down menu in the left corner for Chrome, likely to jump into the App’s menu for force stopping, and other details.
The video also shows the user jumping into the Play Store to update Chrome Dev. The Play Store pops up as a separate window, like a pop-up window you’d see on a foldable like the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
It also shows us the app bar at the bottom, which looks very similar to what we see on the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold. So it looks like Google is basically bringing the Foldable elements to an even larger display, like a Chromebook. The Status Bar is a bit taller, though, making it more optimized for these larger displays.
Google has been working on this desktop mode for years
We have seen evidence of Google working on a desktop mode for Android for quite a few years, and even a working version in some of the Android 16 versions, including the Android 16 QPR3 Beta 2, which is relatively new.
However, now it looks like Google is getting closer and closer to making it a finished product. As well as bringing it over to Chrome OS, and bridging Chrome OS and Android even more.
