- A driver in Michigan was caught going 143 mph in a 45 mph zone.
- The driver was allegedly drunk and had a stolen firearm in the vehicle.
If you’re going to break the law, it pays to be discreet. One Ford Mustang driver found that out the hard way as they attracted police attention for going 75 mph (121 km/h) in a 45 mph (72 km/h) zone.
According to the Shelby Township Police Department, an officer turned around after observing the speeding Mustang. However, the car took off at a high rate of speed and was eventually clocked at 143 mph (230 km/h). That’s nearly 100 mph (161 km/h) over the speed limit.

The officer apparently lost track of the car or decided not to pursue it, but passed the information to other units in the area. Shortly after this occurred, a homeowner called police and said a mysterious Mustang pulled into their driveway. The driver then got out and ran from the vehicle.
When police arrived on the scene, the homeowner told them the man returned to the car and left. However, authorities found it parked in a neighborhood, presumably nearby.

Police noticed a man “curled up in the back seat” and ordered him to exit the vehicle. Once he did, an officer allegedly smelled alcohol and placed him under arrest. Police then searched the Mustang, which reportedly turned up several open alcohol containers as well as a “short barrel rifle” with the serial numbers partially filed off. Despite this, authorities were able to confirm it was stolen from Detroit.
Anthony Averiette was charged with a number of offenses including operating while intoxicated, being in possession of a short-barreled rifle or shotgun, and receiving or concealing a stolen firearm. While it’s interesting the department didn’t mention speeding or eluding, Averitte was given a $50,000 cash/surety bond.
Shelby Township Police Chief Robert Shelide praised the arrest, saying “Taking a stolen gun off the street and stopping a drunk driver is a win for safety for our public.” He added the department is “committed to protecting this community and holding those who break the law accountable – especially when they put other lives at risk.”
