You get dozens of emails every day, which can clutter your inbox and cause you to miss really important ones. Google appears to be working on a small but useful update that will bring a “Mark as read” button to Gmail notifications on Android devices.
Gmail notifications will get a “Mark as read” button for Android devices
According to Android Authority, Google is preparing to add a “Mark as read” button to the Gmail notifications for Android. A screenshot shared by a user on X reveals that the brand is testing this new feature.

As you may know, until now, Gmail notifications on Android devices have included the ‘Delete’ and ‘Reply’ options. However, the latest screenshot shows that a ‘Mark as Read’ button will arrive in Gmail notifications shortly.
In other words, Android users won’t need to open the app or get lost in dozens of emails when they receive a Gmail notification. With just one click, they will mark the relevant email as read.
The user who noticed the new button said that he used Gmail for Android, version 2025.06.15. However, many other users who use the same version of the app still don’t see it. This means the company is testing the new feature with a limited number of users.
Android users have long awaited this feature, which is already available on Gmail for iOS. For now, they just need to wait for it to become available on Android.
When will the new feature arrive?
As mentioned above, Google is currently testing the “Mark as read” feature for Android devices. Predicting when Google will make the feature available is difficult. Users may need to wait a bit longer, especially because Google is still running the test with a limited number of users.
Finally, no one knows whether Google will deliver the new feature through an app-specific update or a server-side change. All these details will become clear in the coming weeks.
