- GM Rewards let owners earn points through offers and small tasks.
- Every 100 points equaled $1 off purchases or GM Financial loans.
- A viral post claims 5.9 million points paid off an Escalade-V.
It’s not every day someone pays off a luxury SUV with loyalty points, but that’s reportedly what happened with one particularly resourceful 2024 Cadillac Escalade-V owner.
Rather than shelling out tens of thousands in cash, they allegedly cleared their loan using GM Rewards points, collected through what appears to have been a glaring loophole in GM’s system. If you’re thinking of trying something similar, though, don’t bother, as the door has quietly closed.

General Motors launched its Rewards program to encourage long-term brand loyalty. According to Resell Calendar, which first reported the story, owners could accumulate points through purchases or by completing simple promotional activities, like watching short videos or filling out surveys.
Every 100 points is valued at $1, and these points can be redeemed for merchandise from GM, accessories, auto parts, and even used to pay down a loan from GM Financial.
The Loophole

The issue? Apparently, points could be freely transferred between accounts with no identity verification. And GM’s promotional platform, Route to GM Rewards, dished out as many as 16,000 points per account just for going through its media content. That combination created a perfect opening.
People allegedly started registering dozens, sometimes hundreds, of accounts, either manually or possibly, through automated scripts. Some worked alone, others enlisted friends and relatives. Either way, they reportedly amassed thousands of dollars in points, all without spending a dime.
How Far Did It Go?
One social media post that went viral claimed that an owner of a 2024 Cadillac Escalade had used 5,937,000 GM Rewards points, worth $59,370, to eliminate their loan entirely. The screenshots looked real enough for the story to go viral.
Still, there’s no confirmation on how long it took to generate that many points or how exactly the individual pulled it off. GM hasn’t verified the specific claim, and no third-party sources have backed it up either.

What GM has acknowledged is that the program was being exploited. “We are aware of misuse of the Route to GM Rewards promotion, which has resulted in its pause as we determine next steps,” a spokesperson told The Autopian.
As reported by GM Authority, the automaker quickly pulled the plug on the promotional offers it had, meaning customers can no longer earn points as easily. There’s no word on whether it plans to re-introduce the scheme, but if it does, we suspect it won’t allow customers to game the system anymore.
