While it’s sort of a lost art these days, coachbuilding was once one of the most respected professions attached to automotive history. During the height of its popularity, and even a bit after, loads of automakers had partnerships with these companies, and would send specific models off for their styles to be tweaked. Coachbuilders would also take cars completely apart and build a brand-new body shell around the bones in some cases. A famous partnership was General Motors and Fischer, with many GM models boasting a “Body by Fisher” door sill plate back in the day.
