Shopping for the holidays (particularly around Black Friday) can be a chore filled with stress and chaos, but thanks to some new agentic AI capabilities that Google is pushing out to Android this week, it doesn’t have to be. Google is touting AI strengths and how consumers can “let AI do the heavy lifting this holiday shopping season.” Google is a bit late to the party with this. OpenAI launched these capabilities for ChatGPT back in September. But better late than never.
Even if you tend to have a pretty good grip on things, extra help is very rarely a bad thing, especially in this sort of situation. People get busy, and things can slip through the cracks. One thing you definitely don’t want slipping through the cracks is acquiring gifts for loved ones you had planned to pick up. This is where these updates can come in handy.
Google will call stores for you to check on whether or not items are in stock using new Agentic AI shopping features
From a merchant’s perspective, it might seem weird to receive a call from AI to verify if something is in stock. On the other hand, if that item is in stock, it almost completely ensures that the person the AI was calling for will be coming into the store to buy whatever it is that was being inquired about.
This is but one of a few new things that Google will be able to do for you on your phone. What’s more, is that you’ll even get a notification from Google with the answer. Google says these responses will come in the form of either emails or text messages. Google will also send stock information from other nearby stores.
The Gemini app now supports shopping functions
The Gemini app can be used for a great many things. For example, coming up with gift ideas. Now, you’ll also be able to have Gemini complete a variety of shopping functions right in the chat. This will let you ask Gemini about gift ideas and then move directly to shopping for the item. This is likely to be a timesaver as you won’t have to jump between apps.
In the app, Google says you’ll have access to everything from product listings to prices from across the web. You’ll also be able to see who might be carrying the items looking for. This feature is launching for all Gemini users as of November 13. Only for users in the US, however.
