Last year, Google announced a massive Gemini-powered overhaul for the popular Chrome browser. However, for a long time, there have been restrictions regarding availability and supported languages. That era has officially ended. Google is expanding AI integration in Chrome to India, New Zealand, and Canada, bringing the power of Gemini 3.1 directly into the browser—along with support for over 50 languages.
Gemini in Chrome brings a side panel: AI within reach of a click
The most visible change for users in these new regions is the introduction of the Gemini side panel. By clicking the icon in the top right corner, you can open a dedicated workspace that sits alongside your current tab. This design allows you to digest a long research paper or a complex legal document while the AI generates a summary or a list of key takeaways on the right. It eliminates the need to constantly flip between tabs, which often leads to “tab fatigue” and lost focus.

Beyond simple summaries, this browsing assistant can perform specific tasks within the side panel. You can ask it to generate a practice quiz based on the article you are reading or request instructions on how to adapt a recipe you found online. Perhaps most importantly, the AI can remember context from your previous browsing sessions. This means you can ask questions about a page you saw an hour ago. So, you can finally close those dozens of “save for later” tabs that clutter your screen.
Seamless integration with Google Workspace
Chrome is also becoming more deeply connected to the rest of the Google ecosystem through a feature called Connected Apps. This integration allows Gemini to “talk” to Gmail, Google Calendar, Maps, and YouTube without requiring you to navigate away from your current work. If you are reading about an upcoming tech conference, you can ask the side panel to find your registration email in Gmail and then check your Calendar for any scheduling conflicts.

The AI can even help with the heavy lifting of drafting communications. If you give it the prompt, Gemini can draft an email based on the information on your current screen. You can then edit the draft within the side panel and send it with a single click. This level of cross-app functionality transforms the browser into a central command center for both professional and personal logistics.
Creative power with Nano Banana 2, agentic browsing
Creativity is getting a direct boost with the integration of Nano Banana 2. This built-in image tool allows you to transform visuals on the fly using text prompts in the side panel. Instead of downloading an image, opening an editor, and re-uploading it, you can simply tell the AI how you want to modify a photo. For instance, you could take a picture of a living room and ask the AI to swap out the furniture or change the lighting to see how different design choices might look in real time.

For those in the United States using the Pro or Ultra tiers, Chrome is pushing even further into “agentic” territory with the auto browse feature. This goes beyond simple autofill by handling complex, multi-step chores on your behalf. It can research flight and hotel costs across various dates to find the best vacation deals or help with professional workflows like filing expense reports and managing subscriptions. To support this automated future, Google is co-developing the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). UCP will ensure that these AI agents can interact seamlessly with retailers like Shopify and Wayfair.
Safety and control
With the browser now capable of taking actions like sending emails or managing commerce, security is a top priority. Google has designed Gemini in Chrome with layered defenses to recognize threats like prompt injection. To keep the user in the driver’s seat, the system includes “confirmation gates” for sensitive tasks. The AI will always stop and ask for your clear permission before adding an event to your calendar or making a purchase.
Supported languages
Lastly, the full list of supported languages includes Afrikaans, Amharic, Bulgarian, Bengali, Catalan, Czech, Danish, German, English (US and UK), Greek, Spanish (Spain and Latin America), Estonian, Basque, Finnish, Filipino, French, Galician, Gujarati, Hindi, Croatian, Hungarian, Indonesian, Icelandic, Italian, Japanese, Kannada, Korean, Lithuanian, Latvian, Malayalam, Marathi, Malay, Dutch, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil and Portugal), Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Serbian, Swedish, Swahili, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, and Chinese (Simplified and Traditional).
