Last week, Google announced that it’ll start rolling out Gemini for Wear OS devices. The search titan made the announcement soon after Samsung launched the Galaxy Watch 8 series, which are the first smartwatches to offer Gemini out of the box. Following last week’s announcement, Google’s Gemini AI assistant is finally arriving on more Wear OS smartwatches.
Gemini is arriving on older Wear OS watches to replace Google Assistant
Google has started making its Gemini AI assistant available to older smartwatches running Wear OS 4 through an app update. Following the Galaxy Watch 8 series and the Pixel Watch, Gemini is replacing the Google Assistant app on earlier Wear OS smartwatches. The only requirement for the smartwatches is to be running Wear OS 4 or higher versions.
To get Gemini on your Wear OS smartwatch, open the Play Store and scroll down to the Manage apps section. If your device qualifies, you’ll likely see a new option to update to “Google Gemini on Watch.” If you find it, go ahead and install the new update on your smartwatch. Once you finish, the new Gemini app will appear in your device’s app drawer, and the Google Assistant app will disappear.
Here’s how you can use Gemini on your smartwatch
Similar to Google Assistant, users can assign a button to trigger Gemini on their Wear OS smartwatches. They can also use the hotwords “Ok Google” or “Hey Google” to do the same. Once you launch the Gemini app on your smartwatch, you’ll see a splash screen with a sparkle at the center of the screen. Then, you’ll find the “Ask Gemini” screen for asking your queries.
Similar to Gemini on your smartphones, you can get answers to complicated queries, take actions within apps, and more with Gemini on your smartwatches.
Google is also working on a raise-to-talk feature to launch Gemini on Wear OS smartwatches. Unfortunately, there’s no word on when exactly Google will start rolling out this functionality.
It’s worth mentioning that some users on Reddit report that their wearables still offer access to Google Assistant, even after they update the app. It appears that Google is taking its time to push the server-side changes to all the Wear OS smartwatches.
