The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the latest foldable smartphone from the South Korean tech giant. It is also their thinnest foldable smartphone yet. This raises the question of durability. After all, with a thinner design, does it mean it won’t last as long? Thanks to YouTuber JerryRigEverything, they put the Galaxy Z Fold 7 through a torture test to find out.
Galaxy Z Fold 7 torture test
In the torture test, JerryRigEverything puts the Galaxy Z Fold 7 through its paces. We’re talking about battery stress tests, bend tests, and also seeing how the hinge fares with a ton of dirt thrown onto it. As the YouTuber notes, to date, none of the Galaxy Z Fold devices have ever snapped in half during these tests. Will the Fold 7 be the first to break?
Spoiler alert: no.
During the test, the Fold 7 held its ground. The inner display did not crack, nor did it crease. The redesigned hinge also held up towards the end. This is a far cry from the very first Galaxy Fold smartphone from Samsung, which unfortunately did not hold up too well. However, to be fair, that was the first iteration in a brand-new product category. It also goes to show how far Samsung (and foldable phones) have come in terms of durability.
In fact, Samsung claims that the Fold 7’s display is rated for about 500,000 folds. So, if durability and longevity are something that concerns you when buying a foldable phone, the Fold 7 passes with flying colors. That being said, we should note that there were some QC issues with the first batch shipped out to customers. Hopefully, this is something Samsung has since rectified.
Other things to consider
While newer versions of Samsung’s foldables have improved on their durability, there are other concerns, namely price. The latest Fold 7 does not come cheap. It is priced at around $2,000. That’s a lot of money for a phone. Samsung does offer a slightly cheaper alternative with the Galaxy Z Flip 7 and the Flip 7 FE.
So, if you absolutely need to own a foldable phone, those are some options you could consider.Â
