Samsung recently launched the Galaxy S26 series, also debuting the One UI 8.5 stable update. However, the first signs of the next big software leap are already here. Recently, an internal version of One UI 9, which is based on the upcoming Android 17, was found on Samsung’s servers for the Galaxy S26 Ultra.
As reported by tipster Tarun Vats, this early firmware carries the version BZC5 and weighs in at a substantial 2.6GB. While it is far from a finished product, the appearance of this build marks the official starting gun for Samsung’s 2026 software development cycle.
First Glimpse of Samsung’s One UI 9 running on Galaxy S26 Ultra
Since One UI 9 will sit on top of Android 17, we can look to Google’s current beta for clues about what is coming. Android 17 is already introducing several functional shifts, such as enhanced support for lock screen widgets and better app windowing.
As spotted by SamMobile, there are also hints of a significant UI change: a split notification system. Following a trend seen in other mobile operating systems, Android 17 may allow users to swipe down from the top left for notifications and the top right for Quick Settings. Security is also getting a boost, with new protections for SMS one-time passwords and an “Advanced Protection Mode” to keep data more secure.
Early impressions: Evolution, not revolution
Those expecting a total visual redesign might need to wait a bit longer. Those who were able to install this early build on the Galaxy S26 Ultra said that the UI looks almost exactly like One UI 8.5. However, this is pretty normal at this stage. Samsung is focusing first on background optimizations rather than aesthetics.

According to SamMobile, the few visible tweaks include subtle rearrangements in the Settings menu and reshaped elements in the quick panel, such as slightly taller sliders. However, because this is an early development build, it is essentially a “blank canvas.” Samsung will likely add its signature features and visual polish as we move closer to the beta testing phase.
Release timeframe
Based on the background, we can expect a predictable release schedule. One UI 9 stable will likely debut with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Flip 8 sometime in mid-2026. Shortly after, the Galaxy S26 series should receive the update. Older eligible devices should follow in the final months of the year.
For the most eager fans, a One UI 9 Beta Program is expected to open up before the official launch, giving users a chance to test the Android 17 features before they hit the mainstream. For now, the appearance of this build confirms that the gears are turning at Samsung headquarters to prepare for the next generation of the Galaxy experience.
