As the saying goes, “If you build it, they will come.” Unfortunately for Trump supporters, they came, but the Trump Mobile T1 phone was nowhere to be found. The phone was originally slated for a release last year, but we’re in 2026 and it still hasn’t arrived yet. So much so that a group of Democratic lawmakers have asked the FTC to launch an investigation of the Trump Mobile T1 phone over “potential violations of consumer protection law.”
Trump Mobile T1 phone under investigation
According to the letter sent by the lawmakers, “The FTC’s response to any violations of consumer protection law by Trump Mobile will serve as a critical test of the FTC’s independence and commitment to its mission of ‘protecting the public from deceptive or unfair business practices.’”
A bit of backstory for those who missed the news: Trump Mobile originally announced the phone back in June 2025. The company promised it would deliver the device to consumers in August, but that clearly has not happened. To make matters worse, consumers who wanted to buy the phone had to put down a $100 deposit. This is the crux of the letter, where the lawmakers want to investigate if customers might have been cheated.
To top things off, the phone was supposed to be a “Made in America” device. This is part of the Trump administration’s push to bring manufacturing back to the US. That was what was advertised on its website, but it was later removed. In fact, there was some suspicion that this was never the case, as some believe that the device pictured on the website was a rebranded version of the REVVL 7 Pro 5G, made by Chinese company Wingtech.
However, when NBC reached out to Trump Mobile, they were told by a call operator that the phone would indeed be made in the US.
Not Trump’s first failed venture
That being said, it wouldn’t be the first time a Trump business venture has failed to deliver. Donald Trump has a pretty extensive history of launching new business ventures, only for them to fail.
This includes board games like Trump: The Game, which sold less than half of what was expected. Trump also tried launching his own airline called Trump Shuttle, which ultimately failed and had to be sold to pay back creditors. There were also his attempts at launching his own university, his own line of steaks, vodka, and more.
But to be fair, Trump Mobile was not personally launched by Donald Trump himself. Instead, it was a venture by his two sons: Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump. Whether the Trump Mobile T1 phone ends up being vaporware remains to be seen. And if it does, hopefully those who put down the $100 deposit will get their money back.
