(NEXSTAR) – A New York-based company is recalling multiple lots of frozen vegetables after sampling done in Pennsylvania tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause potentially life-threatening illness.
The products under recall, sold by Endico Potatoes Inc., of Mount Vernon, are 2.5-pound bags of frozen peas and carrots, and frozen mixed vegetables.
The bags, bearing the Endico label, were distributed between July 18, 2025 and Aug. 4, 2025 to stores in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, Washington D.C. and Florida, according to a Food and Drug Administration (FDA) news release Thursday.
Endico says it stopped distributing the frozen veggies after the positive lab test, according to the release, and both the company and FDA launched an investigation into the cause of the problem.
Any shoppers who think they may have bought Endico frozen vegetables should check the bags in their freezers for the following affected items:
- Peas and carrots: lot 110625, production date 6/11/25, use by date 6/10/27
- Mixed vegetables: lot 170625, production date 6/17/25, use by date 6/16/27
Listeria monocytogenes can survive in the freezer, according to the FDA, and can cause two forms of the disease listeria: gastrointestinal listeriosis, which is less severe, and invasive listeriosis, which is more severe.
Symptoms of a less-severe case can include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, generally lasting for one to three days.
With invasive listeriosis, the listeria spreads beyond the intestines, potentially causing headaches, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions. The disease can be deadly for newborns, adults over 65 and people with weakened immune systems.
During pregnancy, listeriosis can also lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery or a life-threatening infection of the baby. Anyone who thinks they may have been exposed should contact their healthcare provider.
As of Thursday, the FDA says there have been no documented cases.
Customers who bought the recalled Endico vegetables can return them for a full refund at the store where they were purchased.
