Ahead of the upcoming 2025 NFL season, a potential blackout is taking shape for millions of Fox subscribers. This is because YouTube TV and Fox are struggling to finalize a new agreement. Google adds that it might soon remove channels, including the Fox Broadcast Network, Fox News, and Fox Sports, from its TV network. The users may also lose access to the native content.
Fox doesn’t want to renew the agreement, as YouTube TV isn’t paying them enough
Google’s YouTube and Fox are finding it hard to renew the agreement that’s due this Wednesday. Both companies are actively trying to reach a deal. However, YouTube has issued a notice warning to its users that the Fox programs and content may be removed from YouTube TV if an agreement is not reached by August 27, 2025, 5 PM ET.
In an official blog post, YouTube adds that “We want to be transparent about these discussions. If we are unable to reach a new agreement by 5:00 PM ET on August 27, 2025, Fox channels, including Fox Sports, Business, and News, would become unavailable on YouTube TV. Content from these channels saved in your library would also become unavailable at this time.“
Fox accuses Google of market dominance
Fox, however, has pushed back in its own statement. It accuses Google of using its market dominance to force unfavorable items. The media company says, “While Fox remains committed to reaching a fair agreement with Google’s YouTube TV, we are disappointed that Google continually exploits its outsized influence by proposing terms that are out of step with the marketplace.”
YouTube has assured its subscribers that they would receive a $10 credit if Fox content becomes unavailable for an extended period of time. Streaming-related disputes like this are not new to the TV industry. Earlier this year, YouTube TV narrowly avoided a blockout of CBS after striking a last-minute deal with Paramount.
